CAT 6 Cable for CCTV: How to Choose the Right Cable for IP Cameras

CAT 6 Cable for CCTV: How to Choose the Right Cable for IP Cameras

An IP CCTV system depends on more than just the quality of the cameras that are being used in it. The network cable that connects the cameras to switches, NVRs and other network equipment also ends up playing a fairly important role in keeping the entire system stable. A cable that is of poor quality, or one that simply isn’t suited to the job, can lead to connection problems, packet loss, unstable PoE power, and quite a bit of difficult troubleshooting once the installation is already underway at the site.

CAT 6 cable tends to be widely used for IP surveillance, mainly because it is able to provide the bandwidth that modern network cameras require, and it can also support Power over Ethernet installations in most cases. That said, not every cable that gets sold as CAT 6 is actually built the same way. Things like the conductor material, the cable’s construction, its length, the shielding used, the jacket type, and the PoE requirements of the project should all be checked properly before the purchase is made.

What Is CAT 6 Cable for CCTV?

CAT 6 is a category of twisted pair Ethernet cable that has been designed for high speed network communication. In an IP CCTV system, it is generally used to connect network cameras with PoE switches, regular network switches, NVRs and other similar devices.

Typical Cat6 cabling is able to support frequencies of up to 250 MHz, and it is built for Gigabit Ethernet applications. When PoE is supported by the equipment that is being connected, and the installation itself has been designed properly, the same cable is able to carry both network data as well as electrical power to compatible cameras.

This is what makes Cat6 a useful option for CCTV installations where a number of cameras need to be connected across an office, a warehouse, a retail store, a factory, or any other commercial property of that sort.

Why Is Cat6 Cable Important for IP Cameras?

Supports Reliable Data Transmission

IP cameras are constantly sending video data across the network. Cameras with a higher resolution tend to generate more data than usual, and this becomes even more the case when features such as higher frame rates, multiple video streams, or more advanced video settings are being used at the same time.

Supports PoE Installations

A large number of IP cameras run on PoE, which allows both data and power to travel through the same Ethernet cable. This tends to simplify the installation process quite a bit, since a separate power cable may not be required for every single camera on the site.

Works With Modern Network Infrastructure

CAT 6 can be used as part of a structured cabling system, alongside network switches, patch panels and other Ethernet equipment that may already be present on site. This is what makes it a fairly practical option for projects where the CCTV system needs to operate as part of a larger commercial network, rather than as something standalone.

How to Choose the Right CAT 6 Cable for CCTV Systems?

Here are the specifications you should check for selecting the right CAT 6 cable for CCTV systems:

  • Cable category: You will have to confirm the cable is CAT 6-rated and is ideal for Gigabit Ethernet applications.
  • Conductor Material: The cable should use copper or CCA conductors.
  • Cable Length: Cable length should be enough for the project requirement and also consider future expansions.
  • Shielding: Shielded cables are required for environments with electromagnetic interference, and unshielded for normal environments.
  • Jacket Type: Jacket selection should be done based on the installation site.
  • PoE Requirements: Check whether the installation requires PoE setup or not based on the power requirements.

Cat6 vs Cat5e for CCTV Systems

CAT 5eCAT 6
Supports frequencies up to 100 MHzSupports frequencies up to 250 MHz
Suitable for many standard CCTV installationsProvides more performance headroom
Can be a practical choice form basic IP camera setupsSuitable for new and higher-performance CCTV networks
Often suitable where budget is a key factorMay be preferred for future network requirements
Does not automatically affect camera image quality Does not automatically improve `camera image quality
Choice depends on camera network and project needsChoice depends on camera, network, future needs and budget.

When Should You Consider CAT 6A?

CAT 6 is another option worth looking at for projects that have higher network performance requirements. It has been designed for higher frequency applications, and is able to support 10 Gigabit Ethernet over longer distances than standard CAT 6, provided the conditions are right.

For larger commercial buildings, data heavy infrastructure, or projects that are being planned with future expansion in mind, CAT 6A can be considered a reasonable option. For a lot of standard IP CCTV installations though, regular CAT 6 tends to be sufficient enough, as long as it actually meets the requirements of the project.
